A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life away from worry.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, provided by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
