Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the company with Jerry Greenfield, announced that he will personally create the controversial product within a personal collection highlighting causes the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators versus Parent Company
This latest announcement deepens the continuing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support
Mr. Cohen stated via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that originally created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Future Plans
Mr. Cohen stated that he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors that address concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years with the organization, mentioning concerns that its independence was undermined following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
