Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be arrested and punished "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Recording That Sparked the Debate
The clip, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly served in armed forces or defense capacities.
"Similar to us, you all took an vow to defend and defend this founding document," the officials stated in the short video. "Currently, the dangers to our democratic foundation don't only come from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are explicit, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject unlawful commands, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to execute commands that contravene the law or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Incensed Response
The recorded statement appeared to trigger a heated reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a unified announcement condemning the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all acted our nation with tremendous patriotism and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to make certain the safety of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged social media posts and withdraw his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the statement added.
Officials' Defiant Reaction
The lawmakers who participated in the video also released a response.
"We are ex-military personnel and security experts who care for this country and made an oath to safeguard and support the founding document of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental obligation."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it punishable by execution for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "The entire nation must come together and censure the former president's requests for our death and political violence. This is a time for ethical certainty."
More Governmental Comments
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the death of government members."
He stated: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The GOP leader supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "It is very risky, you have prominent officials of the government instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and decide all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill elected officials?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the former president is responding to," the official said. "There are sitting members of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers urging them to ignore the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The sanctity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to disorder, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
