Subsequently, she opted for a different tool because it was cheaper and she could ask it questions at any time. She finished a minute faster than her target finish.

She noted she wanted to avoid the pressure from a live instructor.

"With AI you have to motivate yourself, which I actually prefer," she added.

Fitness coach Dafydd Judd, based in Cardiff, said artificial intelligence can be beneficial to speed up progress, but is convinced it will not supplant the personal interaction and accountability that live training provides.

This expert, who has 12 years experience as a coach, specialises in senior clients and recovery from injuries. He said some of his clients also employ AI.

"I think it's extremely useful, additional information is good," he stated.
"I believe the more people are online the more they'll want human connection because they crave the warmth from the comprehension that is absent from a machine," he continued.

The trainer explained Artificial intelligence can educate users and make coaching more efficient.

However, he argued real commitment comes when people appear physically for training.

"No matter how helpful as it is at the middle of the night, a digital tool cannot ensure you show up at early morning before work," he added.

For many, he said, the gym is a space to leave phones behind and take a break from technology.
