Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
