Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
