The Gory Cartoon Film Conclusion That Lingers Audiences
Among every mature cartoon movies I have personally viewed, nothing has remained with me quite like the terror-laced conclusion of the explicitly bloody as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based filmmaker developed a dark, somber and often savage world that included some tiny , forlorn twinges of hope.
Although Unicorn Wars feels like it came from a drive to advance animation further, the filmmaker clarified that it was rather an attempt to express a widespread, multicultural message concerning “the shared root of each battle.”
That idea is conveyed via a group of vividly colored bears , obviously based on a famous series of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a community focused on aggression and the war machine, a lot of these creatures are fixated on killing unicorns, due to a sacred text which states the bears they previously were rulers of the forest, until the unicorns forced them out.
Some haven’t fully bought into the brainwashing, and prefer to experiment with narcotics or mate outdoors.
Unlike their gentle equivalents, these colorful critters show sexual organs and obvious libidos.
For a certain particularly cruel, skeptical animal, Bluey, the war against unicorns turns into a path toward dominance — and particularly to authority above his softer, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
The character is a bully , a seeming antisocial figure , and while terror dominates his group and takes his comrades one by one, he grabs progressively control on his own behalf, through ever more violent, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are suffering their own nightmare, through an expanding, harmful creature in their woods.
“At the beginning, it feels like a comedy,” the director stated. “But then it becomes a more dramatic and sorrowful movie. And ultimately, it’s a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars begins resembling one of the most quirky features from a renowned animator, which find a mischievous joy in letting animated figures swear, engage in violence, or sex each other up.
Afterward it becomes closer to a more grim film from the same director, featuring progressively graphic violence and a noticeable relation to genuine suffering of war.
Ultimately, it is a full-on theatrical horror bloodbath.
The fear which makes this a perfect Halloween movie begins much sooner than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted gorehounds, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who desire to see a film they have not viewed until now, and who can handle a plot that pulls no restraint.
View it in a dark room free from interruptions, and that ending will dig deep within you and stay with you.
