The Three Lions to Launch Euro 2028 Quest at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
The England national team will initiate their 2028 European Championship journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they attain the anticipated passage for a championship staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an England men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to stage the national team for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The team are set to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning the preliminary round, their last-16 tie would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Kickoff and Protest
The event was inaugurated at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Senior figures from Uefa and the host FAs were heckled as they approached the site by about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged the Israeli team to be removed from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Signs were displayed with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Schedule
The opening game of the tournament will be held at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a game that will feature the Welsh team if they make it.
Wembley will host both semi-finals and the title decider, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at late afternoon.
It is anticipated that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for European club finals from the following campaign, will attract families and help reach a wider spectrum of fans.
Host Nations
The Ireland are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and the Tartan Army would play similarly at Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualifying tournament; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that miss out on the tournament through the standard process.
Stadiums and Knockout Stage
Villa Park and Spurs’ ground complete the nine host stadiums. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarterfinal matches staged at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
Leadership Comment
“This will be a championship for the followers and a celebration of everything we love about the sport – its passion and capacity to foster unity.”
In excess of three million tickets, a unprecedented number for a men’s European Championship, are expected to be released to attendees.
